I've put a lot of thought into what I wanted my first blog post to be about for my new fitness, health and wellness page. After thinking a lot about it, I wanted to start off by speaking a little bit about "diet" and "food control".
When I was younger I never thought about being healthy, in fact, I would eat taco bell and poutine like crazy. I would brag to my friends about how my parents let me eat cake for breakfast. BUT- when I started to get into my teenage years, I realized that I started to become more and more self conscious. My friends were all skinny and I was the chubby kid. I was picked on for being the chubby kid quite a bit. I then realized that I had to do something to shed off the weight and I had to do it quick time. I am going to explain my first method to you, and probably one of the most pointless methods to lose the weight.
Method 1 (what you shouldn't do): So once I realized I had to do something fast to lose weight, I googled and youtube'd multiple ways to "shed weight fast and easy" and trust me- I know you googled this at some point in your life or another. Well let me tell you something- If you want to lose weight fast and easy then you will have only lost that weight for a short period of time. This isn't a lifestyle. I remember eating a lower abundance of food and a lot of green tea. I wasn't that into exercising at that point but I would eat a piece of chicken and restrict my calories. I never went as far as to counting my calories but I definitely tried to restrict them. Being the foodie that I am, this didn't last too long. Although I did lose some of the weight for the few weeks that I did this, I gained it all back because of the caloric restrictions I placed on my body. Food deprivation could be one of the worst things that could be done to your body. Okay so let's move on. How did I go from loving my poutine and fast foods to becoming a full on vegan that now can't even stand the smell of fast food.
Method 2 (the right way that requires you to have a strong and willing mindset): So, once I realized this crash dieting business was complete and utter bullshit, I hopelessly kept researching ways to lose the weight but still be able to eat lots of food. I remember two years ago watching vegan youtubers and seeing the large amounts of foods they consumed and just thinking to myself. Not only do they look good but they also are helping out the environment. NOW- just a disclaimer!!! I am not saying that you have to become vegan to lose the weight so don't panic or roll your eyes just yet!!! But what I am saying is that adding a large amount of the RIGHT foods into your diet will help you be healthy, and give you the proper energy that you need to get your day going. I will give food examples for those who are or aren't vegan. Try out some of these recipes and see how they work out for you. Try and moderate it so you actually enjoy what you eat. Otherwise, you won't last in this lifestyle. Remember, you aren't doing this for one of your vacations that you're going on in which you have to look good in a bikini, or you're not doing this for the cute girl or boy next store. You're doing this for your well being and happiness. You're doing this for YOU and you're doing this to live a happy and fulfilling lifestyle. If you are a huge foodie or unhealthy eater, don't worry I was exactly like you. Your mind is a powerful thing and although it may be tough at times you have the ability to change your life around. You won't be changing anything around if you're not going to make any shifts or changes with your health.
ALSO!!! A quick tip and secret that I use is a table spoon of apple cider vinegar in my green tea with lemon as well once or twice a day. This is an AMAZING metabolism booster!
Breakfast Food Ideas:
Avocado Toast: I love, love, LOVE avocados!!! You can have one or two pieces of toast and put on some avocado on top with tomatoes and cilantro. You can make it into a guacamole dip and spread it over the toast. This breakfast is so filling and healthy. For those of you who aren't vegan you can even add egg into the mix.
Oatmeal: Oatmeal is a great source of carb and gives you a lot of energy. I usually have my oats with almond milk (try your best not to have too many dairy products if you are not vegan. My skin cleared a lot when I eliminated dairy). I add some cashews or almonds and slices of banana's over top. I also use peanut butter and maple syrup to give my oatmeal a little bit more flavour. Lastly, I mix my protein powder in my oats and leave it in the fridge overnight. This gives the oats a little bit more of a crunchy texture.
Green Smoothies: I love starting my day off with greens! Kale, spinach, and banana's in my smoothie with some protein and almond milk is the best thing ever! I then have a granola bar to go as well so I am filled for longer. Smoothies are great because you can also incorporate other nutritional foods that you are missing from your diet. I like to add apple cider to the mix of my smoothie. Apple cider doesn't taste the greatest but has numerous health benefits.
Zucchini Noodles/ Tofu Noodles: You can make your veggies/ protein into noodles and put your choice of HEALTHY toppings in the mix to create a wonderful noodle bowl! Either lots of vegetables with vegan meat supplements or chicken for the non-vegans. I like to add guacamole or hummus for more flavour as well! YUM!
Veggie Sub or Sandwich: There is always the option of having a veggie sandwich! I like to put in fried tofu, with zuchinni, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, onions etc. Even if you are not vegan, you can try out a veggie sandwich because you can add a lot of veggies and healthy toppings to make it flavourful and energizing to your body.
Brown Rice Bowl: Another good option to have some brown rice with your vegetables and meat or meat supplements. You can modify these foods with your own spin to it to make it the way you desire. I like to add a little bit of soy sauce and spices to give my rice more flavour.
Lettuce Raps and Potatoes: The title is kind of self explanatory itself! You can buy long lettuce raps and put in potatoes with other dressings. Make sure your potatoes are not deep fried in vegetable oil! That would defeat the purpose. Baking your potatoes with olive oil is healthy for you!!
Black Bean Salad: Spinach, black beans, lime, guacamole, almonds, spices, some brown rice, fried mushrooms!
